On September 1, a six-year-old girl was killed when al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies shelled the government-held town of Jurin in the northwestern countryside of Hama.

The victim, identified as Cyrine Qusaibi, received fetal wounds in her head. At least seven other civilians, including four children aged between three and eight, were injured in the shelling.

Jurin was one of several government-held towns around the Greater Idlib which were shelled by HTS and its allies in the morning. According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the militants fired more than 50 shells and rockets at these towns.

Last June, a similar attack by HTS and its allies on Jurin claimed the life of a little girl. Back then, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) responded by carrying out intense strikes on Greater Idlib. More than seven militants were killed.

The new deadly attack on Jurin, which represents a blatant violation of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, will not likely go unpunished.

The VKS have been very active over Greater Idlib. Prior to the attack, a series of Russian airstrikes wiped out a training camp of HTS near the town of al-Hamamah in the western countryside of Idlib.

More Russian airstrikes will likely hit HTS and its allies in the upcoming few days, if not hours. The SAA may also take action on the ground
