Late on August 31, a rocket attack targeted a base of the US-led coalition located within the CONICO gas plant in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor.

The Syrian Arab News Agency said that two rockets struck CONICO. However, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the gas plant was in fact hit by three rockets. A video released by the pro-opposition Jesr Press agency shows flames raising from the CONICO plant after the rocket attack.

No casualties were reported as a result of the attack. The US-led coalition and its main proxy in northeastern Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces, have not commented on the incident, yet.

The rockets were allegedly launched from the town of Khsham, which is located in a pocket held by Syrian government forces on the eastern bank of the Euphrates river, a few kilometers away from the CONICO gas plant. Iranian-backed Syrian and Iraqi forces are known to be present in Khsham and its surroundings. These forces were reportedly behind a series of attacks that targeted US bases in Deir Ezzor last July.

Nearly two weeks ago, an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet of the US Air Force shot down an Iranian drone over al-Omar oil fields in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. The oil fields are located in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, just to the south of the CONICO gas plant.

The new rocket attack may have been a response by Iranian-backed forces to the downing of the Iranian drone. The attack highlights the threats facing US forces in northeastern Syria, where the situation remains unstable.
