Early on August 28, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) shelled the southern part of Daraa city, known as Daraa al-Balad, in order to subdue the remaining gunmen there.
The army’s elite 4th Division targeted the gunmen’s posts with battle tanks, heavy machine guns and improvised rocket-assisted munition. No civilian losses were reported.

On August 25 and 26, nearly half of the gunmen wanted by Syrian authorities left Daraa al-Balad under an agreement facilitated by Russia. The gunmen headed to Turkish-occupied areas in the northern countryside of Aleppo.
The SAA will likely continue to target Daraa al-Balad until the remaining gunmen surrender. Only then, Syrian authorities could reach a deal with local leaders in Daraa al-Balad to deploy army units and secure the area.
Meanwhile, attacks continue to target government forces in the countryside of Daraa. Early on August 28, unidentified gunmen attempted to assassinated Ayman Mohamad al-Dniyfat, an alleged agent of the Syrian Military Intelligence Directorate, in the town of Jasim in the western countryside.
The SAA has been taking more security measures to stop these attacks. On August 27, six gunmen who were a part of a plot to attack an army position in the eastern Daraa countryside were ambushed and killed.
Despite recent setbacks, the situation in Daraa appears to be improving. Once the crisis in Daraa al-Balad is resolved, the SAA will likely head to secure other parts of the southern governorate.
